I have a question for you – when is the last time you used your body? Really used it?

 

“What do you mean? I use my body all the time!”

Are you sure?

Does your typical day look like this?

  • Get up
  • Get dressed
  • Breakfast
  • Drive to work
  • Sit at desk
  • Get up for coffee
  • Sit at desk
  • Go for Lunch
  • Sit at desk
  • Toilet Break
  • Sit at desk
  • Drive home
  • Pick up dinner on the way/Cook/Order In
  • Watch TV
  • Sleep

 

If the above looks familiar then please consider my question again. When was the last time you used your body?

Imagine going back to our caveman days when we had to forage, hunt and survive being eaten by predators.  Our bodies are made to run, jump, walk, play, feel, see, hear, touch, move, smell, taste.

Arguably the biggest DANGER in our modern world is that everything is too easy, too comfortable, and too convenient. We suffer from a lack of activity which can be linked to stress, anxiety, depression, diabetes, heart disease, back pain, obesity……

You might well run, but once a week on the treadmill at the gym when you can be bothered to go.

You might play with your children, but quickly get out of breath and give up.

You may move, but does your movement challenge your body? Does it put it to the use for which it was intended?

 

Let’s fight this growing disease of inactivity. Here’s how you start – 5 simple ways to become more active without going to the gym.

  1. Park a little further away from the shops or get off the bus 1 stop earlier and walk the distance. Buy a pedometer and measure yourself. Start at 1,000 steps per day and work up to 10,000 (5 miles).

 

  1. Every time you have the option of lift, escalator or stairs – I’m going to make this one really simple – TAKE THE STAIRS.

 

  1. Set your alarm for 2 minutes earlier in the morning and do 20 Jumping Jacks or 20 Squats or run on the spot. This is doubly beneficial because it will wake you up faster as well. After you complete a week, increase the time by 30 seconds.

 

  1. If you’re watching TV and the adverts come on (who really enjoys watching these?!) try to get down in plank position and hold it for one ad. Work up to 2, or 3 ads.

 

  1. Pick an activity you do every day – say brushing your teeth, going upstairs or putting your shoes on to go out the door – pick an exercise and a number between 1 and 10. Every time you do that activity, perform the chosen exercise for the number you decided upon. Start low and work up to higher numbers.

5 Benefits of being more active (this one’s easy!)

  • More energy to play with the kids
  • Better sleep
  • Feeling alert all day with no mid afternoon lull
  • Less stress at work and at home
  • Feel fitter

These 5 activities are just here to start you off; you can build them up as you go along over time. Gradual progress is great for the long term and certainly much better than going to the gym 3 times a year.
